La trama nos lleva a los años 70, 80 y 90, donde el sacerdote Bernard Prenyat había reconocido haber abusado de docena de niños durante 20 años. El entonces arzobispo de Lyon fue llevado a los tribunales y luego condenado por haber encubierto al sacerdote. El film de Ozon, premiado en Berlín, es una reconstrucción basada en hechos reales. Los nombres de los sacerdotes no han sido modificados pero sí los de las víctimas, tres hombres denunciantes que fueron en el pasado los niños abusados. Estos se escandalizaron por el regreso de aquel sacerdote a Lyon, y decidieron contar la historia. Las declaraciones del cineasta en Alemania, Francia y España provocaron grandes polémicas en la premiére del film. “La Iglesia”, dijo el realizador, “está muy lejos del mensaje de los Evangelios”. El estreno en Francia originó que el propio cineasta fuera denunciado por la Iglesia, pero la solicitud fue rechazada el pasado marzo por el Papa Francisco.
